Matheson Cafe

This lake is known to have mirror-like qualities on calm days, creating perfect reflections of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. It is located close to the Fox Glacier and will take you approximately 1.5 hours to walk around the looping trail.

Lake Matheson

It takes about an hour to complete this walk depending on your pace. The walk requires some degree of stamina due to the steep slopes, but we reckon the raw and rough beauty of the place is well worth it. The turning point of the valley walk is right at the public glacier viewing point, this point may be moved depending on the glacier’s current condition.

Fox Glacier Valley Walk

his valley walk can be completed in ~90 minutes. It starts with a trek into the forest and opens up into an immense valley with views of the magnificent Franz Josef Glacier. Along the way, you will also see the Trident Creek Falls which is described as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the glacier region.

Franz Josef Glacier Valley Walk

Located in the heart of Fox Glacier Township offering locals and visitors a variety of menu options at reasonable prices in a warm and friendly country atmosphere. The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor dining. The Saloon is full of local History, has a great atmosphere, wide screen plasmas, dart board, pool table and regular live music. It's a great place to catch up with the locals and perhaps hear a few good stories from days gone by!

Cook Saddle Cafe & Saloon

This easy walk winds a short way along the bush-clad terraces at the south end of the village. There is no access beyond the bridge due to a slip and you will need to return the way you came. Take a torch and explore this walk at night to see glow-worms in the forest, especially under and around large fallen trees alongside the track. Getting there The walk starts off State Highway 6, at the southern end of Franz Josef village near the 'Our Lady of the Alps' church on the left hand side of the road heading south towards Fox Glacier. The track entrance has a very small parking area, but there is plenty of parking in town just a short walk away.

Terrace Walk

Get out into nature and experience the wilderness on this tour of the Franz Josef Glacier. Soar in the air in a helicopter, trek with glacier boots and crampons, and take in the fascinating colors of the ice flow. 

Meet at the Franz Josef Village base in the Westland National Park and hop into a helicopter. Fly up to the glacier and land on a section pre-checked for safety by your guide.

Equipped with glacier boots and crampons, walk through ice formations and pinnacles for 2 hours. Touch the ice, breathe in the fresh air, and take note of the unique color of the glacier.
